When I read that 52 year old “Gravity” star George Clooney had just got engaged and that her fiancee’s name is 36 year old Amal Alamuddin, my first thought was the race and religion of this woman. She’s probably not white or American. From her name, I guessed that she must be Arabic and a Muslim. But what is a Muslim doing getting engaged to a non-Muslim?
A Muslim woman would never think of getting married to someone who’s not a Muslim unless the man willingly converts to Islam. But there’s no news that Clooney is intending to convert.
Amal Alamuddin is not a Muslim
And then I discovered that Amal Alamuddin is a British barrister. But she’s a Lebanese; born in Beirut, Lebanon but probably moved to Britain and is now working as a lawyer after graduating from Oxford University. She’s also apparently a Human Rights activist.
She’s also not a Muslim but is a Druze which is a religion said to be closely related to Islam but not recognized as such. I guess in that case she can marry whomever she pleases. If she had been a Muslim, she would have caused the Muslim community to oppose to her marriage to a non-Muslim.

That must have been a whirlwind romance for Clooney to get engaged to a woman he’s dated for less than a year. Or perhaps they may have known each other for quite a while but it’s only after he broke up with Keibler that he dared to show Alamuddin to the public. Nevertheless, Clooney’s engagement to Alamuddin can be likened to Jodie Foster who married her girlfriend, Alexandra Hedison after less than a year of dating.
Not your usual trophy wife
Alamuddin must have made a really good impression on Clooney for him to decide to at last settle down. She is very well-educated and not your usual trophy wife. She has very impressive credentials and is not at all involved in the entertainment industry even though many of her clients are high profile clients like Julian Assange.
Hopefully, this engagement will end up in marriage and the couple will live happily ever after.
